At Earth & Wheat, we’re tackling food waste further down the supply
chain – at the making and growing stage. We want to ensure every bit of
nourishment grown and produced is made available to consumers, regardless
of its shape, size or quantity. And we’ve made great progress, saving over
400 tonnes of bread since 2021. However, food discarded during
production equates to just 16%1 of the total food wasted in the UK. There’s a
much bigger problem to solve.
Almost 70% of post-farm food waste comes from our homes 2. That’s 6.6
million tonnes of food being thrown away each year, of which nearly three
quarters are perfectly good to eat 3. We need to go further in tackling the
biggest pinch point, together. From our research, we know that people want
to do their bit for the planet but it’s not easy with the busy lives we lead – the
solution needs to be rooted in changing food culture together.
This report explores the UK’s attitudes and behaviours that are driving our
food waste “culture”. It includes views of over 2,000 UK consumers and the
key opportunities that could help people rescue more nourishment in 2023
and beyond.
At Earth & Wheat, we want to help build a culture of resourcefulness and
respect when it comes to food. To do this, we know we have to work together
across the supply chain. We hope that this report is a stake in the ground to
deepen the conversation and help the nation taste more and waste less.
